Congratulations to the team at Compete for eclipsing Alexa!
It was just a year ago that we launched Compete.com. We weren’t sure what would happen by opening up the aggregate data that we used internally. All we were certain about was that it was time to end the barrier that always stood between those who contributed the data (”users” or worse yet, “panelists”) and those who made use of that data (”marketers”).
Naturally many saw this as an unnecessary distraction at a time when our core business had just hit its tipping point. But a few of us kept pushing the idea forward and with the support of Don McLagan, our CEO, and Stephen DiMarco we were able to launch Compete.com.
I’d like to publically thank what I consider to be the “original” Compete.com team:
TJ Mahony - (Now at FlipKey)
Carl Query - (Now at FlipKey)
Laura Currea
Jay Meattle
Lauren Moores
Roy Todd II
Adam Tornes
Max Freiert
Ryan Carrigg
I’m sure I’m forgetting someone, if so please let me know.
There are many others who have worked hard to make Compete.com succesful since, Thanks to all of you for taking it further than we could have imagined.
These are the slides from my talk on turning seemingly worthless data into a valueable asset. I presented these at the Business of APIs conference in San Francisco yesterday.
I’ll be in San Francisco lobbyconning Web2.0 and other events for the rest of the week.
We launched the Compete API about 8 months ago. Along with the launch of free competitive web analytics it changed Compete’s value overnight. Thanks to the guys at Mashery we were able bring our API online in days not months.
I’ll be speaking at The Business of API’s Conference in October in San Francisco detailing the important strategic and business goals that were met by opening up Compete’s data.
Hope to see you there.
I had lunch with Jeremy Crane today. I don’t make it into Boston much these days, hiding out in my bunker working on Lookery 24×7. But I came in today to attend WebInno 14 and to meet-up with some new acquaintances and some old friends.
This week Compete is releasing their Search Analytics product out of private beta. This was the last big project I worked on before leaving Compete last month. I can’t wait for it to go live, this product is a game changer and it looks like the blogosphere agrees with me.
I came across Tony Spencer’s review of Search Analytics today. Now this is a title you just have to click, “Compete.com’s new tool is so good I kinda feel dirty“.
Compete Search Analytics launches Wednesday put it on your calendar and make sure you try it out. Let me know what you think.
Say hi if you spot me at WebInno tonight.
Happy to see that Compete was named to the Inc. 5000 list today.
